Included with every mdpweb.net account is access to a video conferencing platform called Google Meet. No special plugins or apps are required for your PC beyond Google Chrome, and there are apps available for iOS and Android.
In Chrome, just browse to https://meet.google.com. There you’ll be prompted to Join or start a meeting. If you have video conferencing invites in your Google Calendar, they’ll get listed here too. If you’re joining a conference, enter in the meeting code or nickname. If you’re hosting, choose a nickname or leave the line blank and click Continue. You’ll see a preview of the video conference. (In this example I don’t have a webcam and have my mic muted. I’ll update this image later.) Participating / Viewing At this point, if you’re a viewer or participant but not presenting, click the green Join Meeting button. Above is an example of what you’ll see when you join a video conference that is in progress. You have big buttons letting you mute your microphone, leave the conference and turn on/off your webcam (if you have one). On the top right will be buttons to let you see a list of attendees, as well as a little chat box. You’ll also see a little thumbnail of what your webcam sees, if it’s enabled. The three-dot menu to the bottom right has a few options for you including making the conference Full screen and enabling real-time captions (using Youtube technology – so your mileage may vary!) Presenting If you clicked Present to meeting, you will see a similar screen but also be prompted to choose whether to share a screen or a specific window. Share your entire screen Share a specific window You can only share one screen or one app at a time. But when you do, your presenter’s view of the meeting will look something like this. If for some reason you need to change what screen or window you’re presenting, you will have to click the Stop presenting button, then click to present and choose the new screen or window. When you’re done with the presentation you can click Stop presenting without ending the conference. Google Meet will just swap the video back to your webcam if enabled. To end the conference, you have to Hang up. Conference Lines Google Meet has been updated to include a domestic conference number + PIN with every meeting. The conference line is hosted by Google and is not connected to our internal conference system. If you’re setting up a Google Meet event, be sure to clarify if you intend your participants to call in on the MDP Conference System. G Suite Business account holders are able to host conferences with up to 50 participants, while G Suite Basic account holders can host conferences with up to 25 participants. |
